Neil Ryall has over 25 years of “hands on” experience in deep hole drilling and, too many times, getting oily as a result.
Deep hole drilling, whether gundrilling or BTA (STS) drilling continues to be considered a specialist process. This is really not so. Yes it is, specific but no more so than other specific processes such as honing, hobbing, broaching etc. It is usually a simple matter of “know how”.
The transition to “through tool coolant capability” of many turning or milling machines can give some good success if set up and approached correctly. However, like so may other disciplines, it is simply a matter of knowing what will work and what will not, and when dedicated deep hole drilling machinery takes over.
